Asian Enterprise Magazine Award
Recognizes PacifiCare's Commitment to the Asian-American
Community

PacifiCare a Top Ten Company for Asian-Americans,
according to the magazine
- New
health initiatives tailored to meet the unique
health care needs of Asian-Americans
CYPRESS, Calif. - May 19, 2004
- PacifiCare Health Systems Inc. (NYSE: PHS) has earned
a place on the 2004 Asian Enterprise Top Ten Companies
for Asian Americans, an annual list recognizing companies
nationwide that, according to the magazine, "created
forward-moving initiatives to include Asian Pacific
Americans into their corporate culture." The selected
companies were mentioned in the April and May issues.
The qualities shared by companies named to the 2004
Top Ten Companies for Asian Americans list include:
a commitment to diversity in the work force; Asian-American
directors and executive officers; and innovative products
and services that address specific needs shared among
Asian-Americans. PacifiCare is one of many companies
as well as individuals that will be honored at the 2004
Asian Entrepreneur of the Year Awards gala Friday, May
21, at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.
"Our listing on Asian Enterprise's 2004 Top Ten
Companies for Asian Americans reflects our commitment
to workplace diversity as well as our relationships
with our Asian-American members and doctors," said
Howard Phanstiel, PacifiCare's chairman and chief executive
officer. "We believe our diverse customers are
best served by knowledgeable and experienced employees
who understand their needs, and we are taking action
to develop culturally sensitive and relevant health
and consumer services to improve the health and well-being
of numerous populations." |

According to Sam Ho, M.D., PacifiCare's
senior vice president and chief medical officer, PacifiCare
is launching a comprehensive suite of programs specifically
designed to address the unique health care needs of Asian-Americans.
"PacifiCare is going beyond simply translating
member materials and marketing collateral," said
Dr. Ho. "We are hiring bilingual customer service
representatives, creating multilingual Web sites with
specific and relevant health care information, and developing
or enhancing disease-management programs to address illnesses
that most frequently affect the health of Asian-Americans,
such as lung disease, which ranks among the top-five killers
of Asians in the United States."
In February, Hispanic magazine recognized PacifiCare for
its efforts in serving the Latino community and named
the company to its 2004 Hispanic Magazine Corporate 100,
which lists companies based on their recruitment efforts,
diversity training, ethnic representation of its board
members and minority business initiatives.
"One
of the keys to PacifiCare's success is a business philosophy
that values diversity," Phanstiel added. "It
is a philosophy driven by our company theme that 'Caring
is Good. Doing Something is Better.' We are honored to
receive recognition from Asian Enterprise magazine."
